Aluminium Bifold Door - Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions answered. Here are some of the most common questions we get asked, about our Bifold Doors. If your question isn't listed here then please don't hesitate to contact us:

  • Do You Manufacture PVCu Bifold Doors?
No. We are an aluminium only trade manufacturer and we do not offer any PVCu products whatsoever. PVCu Bifold doors tend to be somewhat cheaper than aluminium, but aluminium Bi-folding Doors are widely considered to be a far superior product. Aluminium may be more expensive, but you get what you pay for. It is the perfect material for windows and doors, as they can be made to be very slim using the natural strength of aluminium. Aluminium does not suffer from the expansion and contraction issues of PVCu and the strength of aluminium means that aluminium bifolds can be made much larger and can take more weight than PVCu Bifold doors. Aluminium is environmentally friendly, endlessly recyclable, maintenance free and built to last, with the life span of aluminium being measured in decades rather than years. Why Aluminium? • Do You Provide A Fitting Service For Your Bi-folding Doors, Or Are You Supply Only?
We are a supply only trade manufacturer, but due to the nature of Folding Sliding Doors we do provide what we refer to as a ‘Fixing Service’ for our bi-folding doors. Bifold doors are not difficult to install, but they do require due care and attention when installing them. They must be installed completely square and level, after which each of the panels must be fully toe and healed. Our fixing service is by no means a full installation service and is aimed at our trade customers. When ‘fixing’ your bifold doors we will install the doors with due care and attention into a fully prepared aperture, toe and heel the panels, foam the frame (where necessary), fully test the doors, and leave the doors in a perfect working condition. This service does not include (but not limited to) mastic, sealing outside, plastering, rendering, making water tight, building works, removing existing doors or preparing the appeture ready for the doors to be installed. If you require a full installation service then we are happy to provide you with the details of some of our many trade companies in your area. These companies can take your project from concept to completion, and provide a professional installation service for our products. Find A Fitter »
  • How Thermally Efficient Are Your Aluminium Bifold Doors?
Our Bi-folding doors are fully compliant to the building regulations and exceed the requirements for part L (Conservation of fuel and power). Our Bifold Doors all use the latest polyamide thermal break technology, which creates a barrier between the outside and inside aluminium sections, therefore reducing heat loss through the aluminium. Our bifold doors also come with 90% argon gas filled Planiterm Total+ (soft coat) double glazed sealed units, with a warm edge spacerbar as standard. This provides a centre pane U-value of 1.2W/M²K, and results in an overall U-value of 1.7 W/M²K as standard. You can specify different glass options to further reduce the overall U-value.
  • What Is The Difference Between The Different Bifolds That You Offer?
Praised for their versatility are our Continental bifolding doors. Using high specification hardware and strong profiles, they can achieve wide and tall panels, with maximum glass areas. They can create stunning fully open corner Bifolds, using a floating corner post.

Our most affordable bifold is the Durafold 1000. A marrige of elegant and contemporary aesthetics they offer thermally efficient, slim profiles and a wide range of colours. They feature our Pendulum handle range, which can provide outside access - without the need for a traffic door.

With their concealed unobtrusive hinges our Emperor bifold doors are in a class of their own. These bifold doors have no unsightly hinges breaking up the clean lines of the doors, and the handles are recessed into the profile. The specially engineered hinges are fully concealed when the doors are closed, resulting in a clean, tidy and contemporary look.

The Durafold Slim-line Plus are our slimmest bi-folding Doors, with meeting stiles of just 94mm. This makes them perfect for small openings. They also have an extra wide Polyamide thermal break, providing excellent thermal performance and low U values.

The Continental Slim-line Plus are the newest addition to our range. Superb shoot bolt locking and a slim meeting stile. This door is able to accommodate larger panel sizes whilst remaining elegant. 1.5 u-value achievable on certain configurations.
  • Which Of Your Bifold Doors Is the Cheapest?
In the most popular / common colours there is currently no price difference between the Durafold 1000 and Continental door systems. Our Durafold 1000 Bi-folding Doors are available in a wider range of standard paint finishes, when compared to our Continental Folding Doors. These standard paint finishes are all available at the same low price, but the Durafold 1000 has more colours available. Non-standard colours, for example Dual colours, have differing prices and in these cases the Continental often works out to be the more expensive of the two door systems. Our online estimator provides a price for both doors, so you can easily compare prices and make an educated decision.
  • How Can I Get A Price For One Of Your Bi-folding Doors?
We do not give out prices over the phone, in order to protect our trade customers. The fastest way to get a price is by using our online estimator. You can however send us details of what you want us to quote by email or fax. Try out our online estimator today and get an instant price. To get a Trade price online, you will need to provide a valid VAT registration number or alternatively for prices through the office we will require a company letter head or purchase order.
  • Do You Offer A Low Threshold Option For Your Bi-folding Doors?
Yes, we offer a variety of different threshold options including flush low thresholds and ramped low thresholds, which help to create a seamless transition between the inside and outside of your property. We do not however recommend Low thresholds for use in exposed areas, such as first floor balconies, properties on the coast or situated on high ground. Our standard rebated threshold is fully weather rated and can be dropped into the floor level, almost completely negating the step over. Check out our Durafold 1000 Bi-folding Door threshold options here and our Continental Folding Door Threshold options here. Watch our Low Threshold Vs Standard Threshold Video »
  • What Door Configurations (opening styles) Can I Have?
There are many different panel configurations available to Folding Sliding Doors, and many of these style offer a traffic door. You can choose open out or open in, all doors can fold to the left or the right, or they can be split to fold both left and right. The number of panels you can have depends on the size of the aperture. In general panels can be between 700mm and 1000mm wide, so a aperture 2800mm wide can accommodate either a three or four panel door. Use our 3D Bifold configurator to see what styles are available at what sizes, or consult our sales or technical department.
  • What Is A Traffic Door & Do I Need One?
Bi-folding doors slide in two's, so an uneven number of panels folding in any direction will always result in an odd panel that can operate independently of the sliding panels. This odd (spare) panel is known as a traffic door. A traffic door allows quick and easy access from the inside and outside of your bifolding doors, without having to slide and fold any panels. If your Bi-folding Door is going to the be the only access door in and out of your property then we would recommend a door configuration that includes a traffic door. • How Secure Are Your Bi-folding Doors?
Due to the nature of Bi-folding Doors they need to be highly secure. We have made every effort to ensure that our Bi-folding Doors as secure as possible. Our Bifolds come with high security multi-point locking and superior snap secure locking cylinders to the traffic doors, as standard. These locks consist of both a high security hook locks (which are a must for bifold doors) as well as latch and dead bolt. Each pair of panels can be secured individually using the heavy duty shootbolt locking at the top and bottom of each pair of panels. This is operated by a key locking handle fitted to each intermediate panel. You can find out more about the security features on each of our doors on our Durafold 1000 and Continental security pages.
  • Do You Manufacture Your Bi-folding Doors Or Buy Them In?
Unlike some companies we manufacture our Bifolding doors from our Essex base here in the UK. We invite you to tour our ten factories in Essex, not far from the M25 to see bifolds like yours being fabricated. We also have a showroom where you can touch, feel and see our products in action and even operate them yourself, before you decide to buy. It is only 5 minutes down the road from our factories and we have a large selection of different folding sliding doors; in various colours, shapes and sizes. Book Your Appointment today »
  • How Slim Are Your Bi-folding Doors?
Using the natural strength of aluminium our bifolding doors have been designed to be very slim. Both our Bi-folding door systems have a profile depth of just 70mm. The Durafold 1000 is the slimmer of the two doors. It has meeting stiles with a glass to glass sight-line of just 132mm, while our Continental Folding Door has meeting stiles with a sight-line of just 140mm. For more in-depth technical information you can visit the Durafold 1000 Bifold technical page and the Continental Bifold technical page.
  • How Large Can You Make A Bifold Door?
Aluminium Bifold doors can be made very large indeed. They can easily be made 6250mm wide and can be made much wider with the use of a mechanical join. Generally the panels themselves can be made up to 1000mm wide though with certain styles panels can be made up to 1200mm wide. Our Durafold 1000 can be made up to 2600mm tall, while our Continental Folding Door can be made up to 3000mm tall. We would not recommend that a bifold be manufactured to both the maximum width and maximum height. The maximum panel weight for our bifold doors is between 80 - 100kg, depending on which door system you choose. You can use our 3D Bifold configurator to see what styles are available at your chosen size, or consult our sales or technical departments for more advice.
  • How Small Can You Make A Bifold Door?
Bifold doors can be made really quite small. We can manufacture a Bifold, which is just 1.5m wide. It is not advisable to have doors much smaller than this as they will begin to bind as they fold closed. The minimum overall width of our bifolding doors is 1400mm and the minimum recommended panel width is 700mm, therefore any bifold door smaller than 2100mm wide would be limited to a two panels. Doors can be made to be just 1600mm high, much smaller than this and it is considered a folding window. Conventional doors are around 2100mm tall. You can use our bifold door 3D configurator to see what styles are available at your chosen size, or consult our sales or technical department, for more information and advice.
